Fright
In the dead of night, the silence is often broken by unexpected sounds that make the heart race. Tonight was no different as I lay in my bed, listening to every creak and groan of the old house. The wind howled outside, causing the trees to sway violently against the windowpanes. It was during moments like these that I felt most vulnerable, surrounded by the unknown and unseen.
Suddenly, a loud thump echoed through the hallway, followed by the faint sound of footsteps. My breath caught in my throat as fear gripped me tightly. Was it just the wind or something more sinister? I hesitated, unsure whether to investigate or stay hidden under the covers. Every fiber of my being urged caution, but curiosity pulled at the edges of my mind.
Gathering my courage, I slowly swung my legs over the side of the bed and reached for the flashlight on my nightstand. Its beam cut through the darkness as I stepped cautiously into the hallway. Shadows danced along the walls, playing tricks on my eyes. Each shadow seemed to take on a life of its own, whispering secrets of the night.
As I approached the source of the noise, my heart pounded in my chest. But there was nothing there—only an old picture frame knocked off the wall by the gusty wind. Despite the anticlimactic resolution, the experience left me with a lingering sense of unease, a reminder of how easily fright can take hold in the darkest hours of the night.
